Volta with various oscillators

Much of the Volta testing thus far has been with the following oscillators we've had on hand:

Plan B model 15
Doepfer A-110
Cwejman VCO-2RM
TipTop Audio Z3000
Livewire AFG

On Friday, I went on a field trip to test Volta's oscillator calibration feature with a wider assortment of oscillators using a Macbook and a MOTU Ultralite mk3. I was pleased to find the following oscillators track quite nicely with Volta:

Arp 2600
Oberheim SEM
Synton Fenix
Modcan Dual Oscillator 46A
Modcan Oscillator 01A
Serge NTO
Serge PCO
Cyndustries Zeroscillator
Analog Systems RS95
Roland System 700
Synthesizers.com Q106
MOTM 300

  1. Know anyone with the Blacet VCO?

  2. I think we'll be able to test the Blacet VCO at some point.

  3. Yamaha or Korg Hz/V?

    EMS?

    EML?

I see a lot of VCOs but absolutely nothing particularly challenging imho.

I guess if you had a Blacet MiniWave or other some digital oscillator that puts out irregular waves it might throw the calibration, like perhaps multiple crossing points? Just a guess.

Best of luck and looking forward to your software.

  4. Volta currently supports Hz/V, but I haven't had an opportunity to test any of these devices. Furthermore, most Hz/V systems tend to live inside monosynths which are a bit more clumsy to deal with than a bare oscillator. I did test with a Putney without success. I'll try this again in the near future after we've implemented improvements to calibration based on the first wave for broad testing.

As far as tuning to a miniwave, you need an oscillator to drive that anyway, from a practical perspective, but I understand what you're getting at - a sort of torture test for calibration. In volta's operational best practices, you want to use a simple of waveform as possible to achieve best results. We're endeavoring to make Volta's calibration procedure as robust as possible. I'll try stressing calibration with a miniwave, just for fun.

  5. Yes, my respect to you, of course I'm getting at probably every reasonably scaled 1v/oct osc will work if one does. I'm sure it will be the non-standard CV osc or something that fails to track as is that won't with your software.

Umm... and I think a lot of Korg MS series users think they are using a modular are itching to use your software ;-) Though the gate might be a bit of a challenge?

You probably could get an EMS to work with a hardware attenuator. You might not get the VCO 3 to work, but I've tracked 1 & 2 fine with a regular interface and an attenuator. The gate on that one is pretty normal once you get to it, which might not be straight forward without a mod or a patched out keyboard connector. Many users stick a CV pot or resistor in their connector once they have one made or synthi mod-ed
